Evaluation of the Wind River Indian Reservation Infant Mortality Prevention Program

This five-year project is being conducted for the Northern Arapaho Tribe, under a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Infant mortality rates on the Wind River Indian Reservation are nearly three times the national IM rates. Interventions have been designed and implemented to:

  1. Increase community awareness of the importance of early and adequate prenatal and well-baby care
  2. Outreach and support to pregnant women to increase early prenatal care
  3. Well-baby workshops
  4. Culturally-appropriate parenting classes
  5. Peer support group Talking Circles for young mothers and young fathers
  6. Education about healthy pregnancies and reproductive health and planning for high school students
  7. Providing support and assistance to families who are facing homelessness and other challenges that contribute to child neglect and maltreatment.
